A derivative of rapeseed oil, its name "Canola oil" is a shortened version of "Canada oil low acid."
Had they kept its actual name, rapeseed oil, probably no one would buy it, which really is just as well.
Here's a little history on rapeseed oil: During the second world war, rapeseed oil was used on naval ships as a lubricant.
Rapeseed oil is such a terribly foul tasting and smelling oil that it must be heavily refined, bleached and deodorized using harsh chemicals for it to be palatable.
In the UK we have local cold- pressed rapeseed oils.
